THE HISTORY OF CATFISH STUDIO -
Emily Cohen , founder of Catfish Studio, began creating custom, one of a kind, stained glass lamps and panels in 1978. After specializing in stained glass for ten years the Studio began expanding it's horizons by experimenting with "Fused Glass". Fused glass is produced by combining different sizes, colors and shapes of glass into one unique artistic object. The various pieces are "fused" by heating them to approximately 1,400 degrees in a glass kiln, until they enter a semi liquid state, with shapes and colors blending in interesting patterns and colors.
While the first fused glass designs were relatively large, plates and bowls, the Studio's focus eventually shifted towards fused glass jewelry. The year 1992 brought major changes to Catfish Studio. The Studio relocated from Boca Raton, Florida to Ardmore, Pennsylvania and began participating in art shows in the Philadelphia area.Several of the shows allow artists to show their wares by "invitation only". With a strong following at these shows, Catfish Studio is invited back year after year. Along with the move in location came a move towards jewelry using more conventional materials; Silver, precious and semi-precious gems. Other materials are not so conventional, for instance, River Rock and Amber. Although some of the materials used are more conventional, the designs continue to be creative and unique. Although Catfish Studio has evolved over the years, it is still run by the original artist / owner. She continues to put the same care, creativity and quality into every piece of unique, handcrafted jewelry produced at the Studio.
